AI is no longer the future — it’s the part of our everyday life.

A few years ago, when I stopped playing cricket, I wanted to start a new fitness routine to stay physically active. I decided of start with something simple as jogging.

I shared my idea with one of my colleagues. He liked it and suggested getting a good pair of jogging shoes to avoid injuries and a smartwatch to track my daily progress. Like most of us do before starting something new, I went straight to YouTube, searched “Jogging for Beginners” and watched few videos.

The very next day, while browsing the internet, I noticed something interesting.
My browser was showing ads for jogging shoes. My feeds had smart watch recommendations that athelete uses to track their fitness. YouTube had already started suggesting marathon training videos, morning workout routines, and jogging music playlists.
What surprised me was that I had never searched for any of those things directly.

I found this a bit strange and it made me curious.
When i told my colleague about my jogging plan, he suggested things that could help me. Simillarly, when I searched for information online, I started receiving suggestions and content related to my search. It almost felt as if the internet was responding the same way a person would.

I wanted to understand what was really happening.
So, I researched for “how youtube provides recommendations and personalized suggestions”. That’s when I first came across the term AI.

Discovering Artificial Intelligence

The next question that came to my mind was:
“what is AI?”

I went back to the internet and learned that AI stands for “Artificial Intelligence.”
AI is a system or software that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. In simple terms, AI can learn, reason, and solve problems much like we do.

Understanding AI

To understand how AI works, I first tried to understand how we approach a task or solve a problem. When I thought about it, I realized that I usually:

  • Understand the situation
  • Reflect on my past experiences
  • Apply common sense
  • Imagine possible solutions
  • Choose the best option

Then I researched on how AI performs tasks and solves problems. I found that AI generally:

  • Receives data
  • Finds patterns
  • Compares with past examples
  • Calculates probabilities
  • Produces an output

The key difference is that:
AI uses data, Humans use lived experience.

Lets understand human and AI approaches with my jogging example.

My colleague understood my situation, remembered his past experiences, and suggested buying jogging shoes and a smartwatch.

On the other hand, Youtube’s AI received data, in my case – the search words I typed into the search bar. It then looked for patters by analyzing what other users watched after searching for similar topics. Based on those patterns, it predicted what I might find useful and started recommending content accordingly.

YouTube’s AI followed a completely different process, but arrived at a similar outcome.
Same result. Very different process.

So, can we say “AI can think or feel like humans?”

Not Really.

AI doesn’t think, feel or understand the world the way humans do. It learns from large amount of data to identify patterns, make predictions and solve problems.

Let’s break that down using the jogging example:

  • Data — Information collected from millions of YouTube users who searched for jogging related topics.
  • Pattern — Viewing behavior of those users. In other words, what videos they watched after searching for jogging related topics.
  • Prediction — The possibility that I might also be interested in watching similar videos.
  • Solution — YouTube started recommending jogging related shorts and videos, even though I had never searched for them.

Real-World Applications of AI

Now that we understand what AI is, let’s look at how it can be used in our daily life.

AI can help both in our personal lives and in professional work by automating tasks, analyzing large amounts of data, and solving complex problems.

Everyday Examples of AI

  • Siri and Google Assistant, these AI-powered virtual assistance help us perform daily tasks and answer our questions.
  • Phone unlocking through facial recognition, where AI identifies and verifies our face.
  • Image sorting, where AI organizes and categorizes thousands of photos in seconds.
  • Self driving cars, whera AI helps make driving decisions.

Industrial Applications of AI

  • Writing and reviewing code in the software industry.
  • Autonomous quality control, where AI helps identify defective products during manufacturing.
  • Smart warehouse Automation, where AI enable machines to navigate, pick, and sort items with minimal human intervention.
  • Generative Product Design, where AI assists engineers and designers in creating new products.
  • Diagnostic medical Imaging. where AI helps detect fractures or early-stage diseases that might be difficult to spot.

These are just few examples. AI is being applied in many other areas based on human needs and business requirements.

The Future of Humans in an AI-Driven World

Now that we know what AI is, how it works and where it can be used, the next question is about the future of humans in an AI-driven world.

As AI continues to improve and becomes capable of handling more tasks, many people wonder whether AI will eventually replace humans.

Honestly,
AI can process vast amounts of data, recognize patterns, and perform repetitive tasks with speed and accuracy that no human can match. However, AI still lacks genuine creativity, empathy, leadership, judgement, critical thinking, emotional intelligence and the ability to truly understand human experiences.

AI cannot understand me the way my colleague did.

My colleague didn’t just process the keywords. He understood my goal, my lifestyle and even my hesitation. He genuinely wanted to help by offering practical advice based on his experience. That kind of human understanding is something AI still cannot replicate.

The way I see it ,
AI is not replacing humans. AI is replacing tasks.
Some tasks will become automated. Others will become easier and faster.
Future doesn’t belong to AI alone. It belongs to the people who learn how to use AI effectively.
